If you have to stay in Memphis this where want to be. Yes it scary getting here but once you are here its fun and safe for the family. You don't even realize you are in the city.
The neighborhood you drive through to get here is pretty scary. Once here it seems OK. Clean, some pull throughs, some nice 40+ ft sites. The ranger and the host do frequently drive through which made me feel a lot better. There are ticks in the campground and poison ivy on the trail. Free ice!
Its a nice place.
This was the 4th campground we checked out in Memphis. The other three were all near Graceland and are in a really sketchy part of town. I guess the neighborhood has gone down a good bit since Elvis lived there. We were concerned about this park too, since you drive through a run-down neighborhood to get to it, but then it gets rural for a mile or two and there you are. We were actually relieved. All we did was camp and use the bathhouse so I can't comment on the trails or anything. Our campsite near the bathhouse was nice, with electric, water, and picnic table. The bathhouse has large showers with locking doors. The showers are concrete block with concrete floors so not real fancy, but certainly functional. About what you'd expect from a state park. The place was quiet and we saw the rangers go through a few times. We had no problems.
Former golf course makes excellent running trails. Pool. closed for season for repairs. Guided nature hikes.
